August 2009
Dear Family and Friends:
Wherever I travel, I bring my Philippine rainstick with me. Woven strips decorate the outside while stationary bamboo “nails” and free-falling seashells fill the inside of this stick. Tipping the stick creates a sound very much like rain. Rainy weather tends to follow me around throughout my travels, making me wish sometimes that I had a “sunstick” instead! One night the weather was so bad that the power in the church flickered and finally went totally out. I ended up speaking via flashlight for forty-five minutes (sharing my testimony, relating experiences on the field, and taking questions), since the DVD couldn’t play and the only piano was a digital piano that required electricity! Flexibility is definitely a key to missionary service.
The Lord gave me several different opportunities to serve Him this month. I helped with another VBS at a church in Indiana. Forty children listened with rapt attention each night as I shared about “Juan of the Philippines.” One night I had the privilege of counseling a young girl for salvation. Eleven others came back for counseling as well.
I had an opportunity to attend family camp at Camp Peniel in Ohio. There were many ways to help out, from after-meal clean-up to children’s recreation time and playing piano for services. I enjoyed working with the children except for the fact that I caught my foot in a net (at the playground) the first day and ended up wearing a purple ACE bandage and limping around the rest of the week!
Teaching is always something I enjoy. This month I was able to teach hymnplaying lessons to two individuals–one pastor’s wife and a pastor’s daughter. I love helping others become more effective in their local church ministries.
Please pray for the following requests:
1. Safety as I drive long distances alone.
2. Wisdom as I contact new churches for meetings.
3. Financial support. My support level is currently at 45%.
